meh could have used more decoration and the spikes don't fit with the tileset and there's not enough giga walls.

pick a color palette and just arrange them on the screen. either dark -> light or light -> dark. if you wanna sandwich one color between two others pick a darker shade of the outside colors. like gold in between two yellows.

as far as tiles and stuff im not to good at that but simple geometric patterns look good. i'm often inspired by the backgrounds on the difficults.

Yeah, when it comes to making maps, my thought process tends to be extremely mathematical. I'm not really one for placing tiles randomly and seeing if it works OK.

I feel pretty confident with my virtual maps (because there, you can be very mathematical), but it's just maps like this one, and Flou from a while back. They just look incredibly bland, and yeah, I can't add anything without overdoing it, or accidentaly doing an illusion effect like in Down the Rabbit Hole.
