One suggestion would be to make the map follow more of a path, sure it can have different turns and ends but make sure the player isnt forced to be leaving dust and going out of their way to try and find the way back onto the main path that the map follows.

I like this map a lot. I do not think there is an absolute need for a "route", this is like a pick your own adventure map!
